Teak furniture like a garden table is a durable and beautiful addition to your patio or garden. But teak loses some of its natural lustre thanks to weathering and the passage of time. Outdoor teak furniture endures harsh sunlight for long periods, so it can start to look dull and grey. But you needn't worry. Follow these simple steps to restore the original lustre of your teak garden table.

Clean The Furniture To Remove Residual Dust And Dirt

Your teak garden table is bound to accumulate dust and dirt over time, so you need to get rid of this before applying any sealer or stain to the wood. Start by cleaning your teak furniture using teak cleaner or regular detergent-filled soap water. Use a soft brush or lint-free cloth to wipe down your teak garden table with the soap water or teak cleaner until you've given it a thorough cleaning. Wait till it dries completely before you proceed to the next step.

Sand The Teak Table

Use medium-grade sandpaper to sand your teak garden table. Apply long and even strokes to bring out the rich colour of the original wood underneath. Avoid using coarse sandpaper because this may gouge the table more than you like. Finish off by sanding with finer sandpaper to smoothen out the wood texture. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth to remove any residual dust from the sanding process. Vacuum the dust away to prevent it from flying back onto the garden table.

Apply Teak Wood Oil

Teak wood contains natural oils that help in resistance to all types water damage. This gives teak wood its strength and durability. But this oil on the surface of teak will evaporate over time when the furniture is kept outdoors. Since oil remains below the surface, the sanding process will bring out a layer of natural oil. But applying teak oil will produce a natural lustre that will prevent the wood from turning grey over time. When applying teak oil, use a paintbrush to apply even coats along the surface.

Let The Teak Wood Oil Dry Between Coats

If you're applying more than one coat, make sure that the previous coat has enough time to dry. Follow the drying instructions provided by the manufacturer when applying a few coats of teak wood oil. Teak wood oil is obtainable at most home improvement stores.
